Snow cones were a huge success, but it was time to test out the ice cream side of the snow cone vs. ice cream debate. When we made our venn diagram, some of the students came to the conclusion that snow cones only had fruit flavors, but ice cream has lots of flavors. You can even add mix-ins! When we interviewed our friends, we also learned that mint, or mint chocolate chip, was a favorite. Since we grow mint year round at Little Garden, that seemed like a good place to start.

We headed out to the garden and worked on those fine motor skills as we picked individual mint leaves for our ice cream. We needed some visual discrimination as well as we discerned the difference between the mini-rose leaves (planted with our mint) and our bumpy mint leaves.
After picking, washing, and steeping our mint leaves in cream, it was time to move along with our ice cream making.

We are lucky enough to have an old ice cream ball, which makes ice cream hardening a whole class, whole body experience. After adding the ingredients into the canister, we added ice and salt to the cold chamber. Then the rolling began!

The ice cream turned out pretty delicious. By the time we got to serving and eating, our hands were a little too busy to take many pictures. However, most of the kids did agree to give it two thumbs up!
